Places to spend a few hours or the day, with or without spending lots of cash.
The downtown area of Northampton is very compact with lots to do, so it's a great daytrip/walking destination. Visit the Smith College Museum of Art or walk the grounds of the campus, browse books in the Forbes Library, take in a movie or show at the Academy of Music or the Pleasant Street Theater, get an ethnic meal (Indian, Thai, Japanese, Creole, just to mention a few), or window shop the variety of specialized stores on and around Main Street.
Note that Northampton is fairly aggressive about ticketing, so make sure you park in the parking garage or a long-term lot if you plan to be in town for more than an hour.
Shelburne Falls is probably best known for the Bridge of Flowers, located in the downtown. The Trolley Museum is within walking distance, as are the Salmon Falls Artisan Studios.
