World’s Largest Pancake Breakfast returning to downtown Springfield

May 9 2018

The World’s Largest Pancake Breakfast takes place on Saturday in downtown Springfield.

Want to take a break from making breakfast on Saturday?

Then head on down to the World’s Largest Pancake Breakfast in downtown Springfield and leave all the work to someone else.

“Let us do the cooking and serve you up some fluffy pancakes with bacon from Carando Classic Italian alongside coffee, juice, milk and other fixins’,” said Judith A. Matt, president, Spirit of Springfield, organizers of the annual nosh fest.

If you want to be the first in line to enjoy breakfast at a giant table along Main Street, then get there in plenty of time before the first flapjack flips off the griddle at 8 a.m. If you are late and don’t arrive until close to 11 a.m. when the breakfast portion of the event ends, Matt said “not to worry.” The griddles won’t shut down until the last person in the long lines has been fed. Breakfast tickets are $3 for adults and $1 for children.

This year’s event – in honor of Springfield’s 382nd birthday – is sponsored by MGM Springfield.

Helping to serve up the bacon this year will be MGM Springfield General Manager Alex Dixon.

“It is my pleasure and honor to represent MGM Springfield and serve as the honorary chair for this year’s Pancake Breakfast, and I am proud to be following in the footsteps of prior chairs of this event. Contributing to the pride of a community is something MGM Resorts knows well,” said Dixon in a Spirit of Springfield news release.

But it isn’t just the pancakes and a tasty meal that brings thousands of people to the open-air breakfast downtown, noted Matt. It’s also the entertainment and plenty more to do.

There will be two entertainment stages featuring the Sci-Tech Jazz Band, En Motion Dance Theater, Springfield Boys and Girls Club, Chloe Reed, Noel’s Dance and Gymnastics, Youth Expression, National Square Dancers, Grisel’s School of Arts, and Ackilli’s Dance Studio.

But, there is still more. Court Square will host the Spirit of Springfield Tag Sale, McDonald’s Happiness Tour, mini-train rides and the Massachusetts Army National Guard. The National Guard will have inflatable games and a trailer filled with video games. Also, the Springfield Police and Fire Departments will have a handful of emergency vehicles on display, some to even climb aboard. And, the Springfield Police Department will once again bring their canine dogs along for demonstrations and photographs.

New this year will be a Mother’s Day Open-Air Market with an eclectic group of vendors selling handcrafted items and more, which is being coordinated by Mikki Lessard and Nancy Feth, owners of Simply Serendipity. Also, NOSH will be offering their artisan breads for sale and Sweet Ideas will be baking up some sweet temptations. The open-air event will be located at The Shops at Marketplace located in the rear of 1341 Main St.

“There would be no breakfast served up on Saturday if it wasn’t for the hundreds of volunteers who step forward each year to help make this much-anticipated community event possible,” said Matt.

“Volunteers get into action as early as Friday at Mercy Medical Center where they will be mixing the pancake batter and filling 100 5-gallon buckets that will be delivered to the downtown breakfast on Saturday. Then, on Saturday, volunteers arrive as early as 4 a.m. to begin all the preparations and don’t leave until the last piece of trash is picked around 1 p.m.,” Matt said.

Among those helping to cook, serve, sell tickets and keep the tables clean will be hundreds of volunteers representing 94.7 FM WMAS, Armoury Quadrangle Civic Association, Bethel Child Care Services, Exchange Club of Springfield, Jack and Jill of Western Massachusetts, iHeart Media, Law Offices of Maurice Poe, MassLive, Rock102, SATCO (PVTA), Springfield Code Enforcement/Building Division, Springfield Department of Health & Human Services, Springfield Law Department, Springfield Thunderbirds, Springfield UNICO, The Q 99.7, U. S. Postal Service, Western Mass News, Western Mass. Square Round Dance Association and YWCA Youth Build.

In addition to MGM Springfield, the World’s Largest Pancake Breakfast is supported by donations from area businesses including: American Medical Response, Baystate Health, Cabot Creamery, Carando Classic Italian, Costco, Elegant Affairs, Gleason Johndrow Landscaping, Hampden County Sheriff’s Department, Health New England, H.P. Hood, Mansfield Paper Company, Massachusetts Army National Guard, Mercy Medical Center, Performance Food Group, Republic Services, Sheraton Springfield, Springfield Business Improvement District, Springfield Parking Authority, United Bank as well as the Springfield Police, Fire, Parks and Public Works Departments.

The Spirit of Springfield has been presenting the World’s Largest Pancake Breakfast – one of the non-profit organizations signature events – since 1990. Up next for the Spirit of Springfield will be the annual Star Spangled Springfield filling the air with colorful fireworks to celebrate the Fourth of July.
