Williamsburg was incorporated in 1775. Much of the downtown is made up of Greek Revival architecture, dating from 1825 to 1860. The town is located along the Mill River and was subject to a devastating flood in 1874, when the Williamsburg Reservoir Dam burst, killing 139 people in Hampshire County.

The town includes the village of Haydenville, where the Brass Mill is.
