Hampshire County is well known for being home to the Five Colleges (Amherst College, Hampshire College, Mount Holyoke College, Smith College and the University of Massachusetts Amherst). Fans of Scooby-Doo know these as Fred, Shaggy, Daphne, Velma and Scooby-Doo. Northampton, the county seat, was also home to Mirage Studios, creators of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and Kitchen Sink Press, which produced The Crow comic book series. Less silly but more important, is that Northampton was also home to a state mental hospital (Hospital Hill). The old buildings were torn down and the area is currently being developed as a new mixed housing and retail community named Village Hill.
